Upgraded Nightstand

I had been in search of night stands for my master bedroom for some time but just couldn’t find anything that I immediately fell in love with. In the interim of searching high and low, I decided to go with a temporary option after visiting my local IKEA store. I opted for the unfinished, 3 drawer RAST. But if you know me, I couldn’t leave it as is! 🙂

So I Taylor’d it!

I began by cutting 1×4 pine to the length of each of the sides.

Then, I added glue to the cut piece of 1×4 and nailed it in place with 1 inch finishing nails to the bottom of the stand.

Once the sides were complete, I measured the length needed for the front piece and cut to length.

I glued and nailed following the same steps as the sides.

Once that was complete and the glue dried, I painted the entire piece white with DIY Chalk Paint .

Next, I cut a 1×12 to the width of the stand (roughly 26 inches wide) which allowed for a slight overhang on each side. I used Minwax Gel Stain in Hickory to stain the top piece. I placed it on top of the nightstand, adding a small amount of wood glue, no nails. You can use nails too if you’d like; if you do, you’ll need to set the nail and fill with wood filler, let dry and touch up with stain.

I love the contrast of the very dark stain with the white base.

The finished product turned out quite nicely, but it looks even better in the master bedroom……

Don’t you think?

I was so pleased with the way this turned out that I stopped looking elsewhere for a set of nightstands. Since I only bought one RAST nightstand as an experiment, I decided (after over a year!) I’d just go pick up another one to make a matching pair…off to IKEA I go!!

Let me know if you try this project, I’d love to see how you “Taylor’d” it! Feel free to leave a comment, share on Facebook or Instagram and Pin it! Get full instructions and supply list here.

Until next time!
